Chronicle of Fredegar, as it is commonly known (Chronicarum Quae Dicuntur Fredegarii Scholastici Libri IV - Four Books of Chronicles Known as Those of Fredegar the Scholastic).
          Anonymous, probably of Burgundy; completed c AD 660. Four books, from the creation of the world to AD 642, with notices to 658;
          some copies carry Continuations to the death of Pepin the Short in AD 768. The name is no part of the work, being given it by Claude Fauchet in 1579.
          Carries, in an interpolation to Book II, the oldest telling of the Trojan origin of the Franks, whence the earlier Wardens of this register descend:

Collins, Roger. Die Fredegar-Chroniken. Monumenta Germaniæ Historica, Studien und Texte, Band 44.
Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz Verlag, AD 2020; earlier Hannover, AD 2007; an unpublished English version circulates in typescript as The Fredegar Chronicles.
A study, not an edition. Holds the matter to be two works and not one, and finds Krusch’s edition of AD 1888 — which every later edition follows — to be a hybrid,
linking two text forms that never coexisted in the manuscript tradition.
Gives the Continuations their own name and makers: Childebrand and Nibelung’s Historia vel Gesta Francorum, written at the command of Count Childebrand, uncle of Pippin III,
and finished under his son Nibelung after AD 768, on the colophon of MS Montpellier, École de Médécine 158.

Fauchet, Claude. Les Antiquitez Gauloises et Françoises, Augmentées de Trois Livres Contenans Les Choses Advenues en Gaule et en France Jusques en L’an 751 de Jésus-Christ.
Paris: J. Périer, AD 1599. The enlarged edition, which keeps him and sets Idace beside him.
